Ibadan Polytechnic Workers Begins Indefinite Strike

Workers at The Polytechnic Ibadan, on Monday , vowed not to succumb to pressure as they began an indefinite strike over the non -implementation of the minimum wage by the Oyo State Government .

A joint committee of all staff unions in the institution, comprising the academic and non- academic staff , held that the governing council and the Oyo State Government failed to implement the minimum wage for the workers.

The Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria , Ibadan Polytechnic branch , Abiodun Abegunde , said the matter must be addressed immediately .

While lauding the workers for their patience , Abegunde noted that the wage structure being demanded by the unions was lower than the amount being paid in sister institutions in other states .

The representative of the academic staff union, Nurudeen Akinade , said the edict that established the polytechnic had been violated , saying such a development should be rejected .

He said , “No form of sabotage would scuttle the realisation of our demands. ”

The workers at the meeting said that they had endured enough, adding that the state government had taken their patience for cowardice.

The Registrar of the polytechnic , Modupe Fawale, in a statement made available to journalists on Monday , said ,

“The Management wishes to appeal to the striking workers to return to negotiation table with the government as the strike action would only put more strain on the activities of the institution . We want to appeal to the Unions to unlock all the gates leading to the institution as there are a lot of stakeholders who will suffer from this action.
