FUTA COVID-19 Prevention Protocols, Resumption Guidelines

  The management of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has released the COVID-19 prevention protocols and resumption guidelines for all students of the institution. All students are to note the following guidelines for resumption: University Hostels will be opened to accommodate students as from Monday 18th January 2021. No student will be allowed into the hostels earlier than that date.  Hand washing materials will be provided at strategic points within the campus, and students should wash their hands at regular intervals.  Students are to ensure strict compliance with Covid-19 protocols by putting on their facemasks within and outside the University premises, and in this regard, each student is to have at least five (5) sets of washable facemasks.  Each student is to come with hand sanitiser, which should be in his/her possession at all times and be used at intervals. UNIPORT Installs Covid-19 Treatment Center, Safety Measures Ahead Of Resumption

The university of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT) plans to resume academic activities on February 1 , 2021 , following its senate ’ s decision, the institution said it has put in place measures of enforcing COVID -19 safety measures to avert any disruption of its academic activities by the second wave of the pandemic. The Public Relations Officer of the University, Sam Kpenu , said the institution has also installed COVID -19 testing , holding and treatment centres within the university campus which had been certified by the Nigerian Centre Disease Control. Kpenu noted that the university had also decontaminated its campus to ensure zero infections, as well as the acquisition of thermometers for student’ s temperature confirmation before and after lectures . Ibadan Polytechnic Workers Begins Indefinite Strike

 Workers at The Polytechnic Ibadan, on Monday , vowed not to succumb to pressure as they began an indefinite strike over the non -implementation of the minimum wage by the Oyo State Government . A joint committee of all staff unions in the institution, comprising the academic and non- academic staff , held that the governing council and the Oyo State Government failed to implement the minimum wage for the workers. The Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria , Ibadan Polytechnic branch , Abiodun Abegunde , said the matter must be addressed immediately . While lauding the workers for their patience , Abegunde noted that the wage structure being demanded by the unions was lower than the amount being paid in sister institutions in other states . The Joint Committee , Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities will start a three - day protest today . A statement by the General Secretary of NASU, Mr Peters Adeyemi and president of SSANU , Mr Mohammed Ibrahim on Friday , said , the JAC NASU/ SSANU observed that the federal government failed to address any of the agreement it signed with the union on October 20 , 2020. Vice-Chancellors opposes ASUU,Says Varsities Can Resume

 Vice -Chancellors of some federal and state universities in Nigeria have expressed readiness to reopen schools. Though the Academic Staff Union of Universities had said that varsities were not ready for reopening , the VCs said they had planned to reopen their institutions as directed by the Federal Government . One of the VCs of a federal university in the South- West told our correspondent that it was wrong for ASUU to claim that there were no guidelines for reopening varsities . Apart from the scare arising from the second wave of COVID -19 , another VC said some of them ( VCs) had planned to stagger resumption . “I think ASUU should begin to speak to facts. Inasmuch as we do not want the COVID - 19 outbreak on our campuses, we had our plans. All students of the Federal University of Technology. Owerri (FUTO) are hereby notified that the University will resume academic activities in continuation of the 2019/2020 academic session, as follows;   1. Year three (III), four (IV) and Five (V) students will come into residence on Sunday, January 24, 2021 and resume lectures on Monday, January 25, 2001 2. Years one (1) ard two (II) will return to campus on Sunday, February 21, 2021 and resume lectures on Monday, February 22, 2021.
